Elephant Country
Despite being a Tiger Reserve, tourists to Periyar sight mostly elephants as they are abundant here. There are 900-1000 elephants in the region and it is quite eye-filling to watch them roam around in the forests in herds, drink water and frolic in the lake. You can also ride on one here.

Periyar offers many more possibilities for the adventurous to get to know the jungles better. Here are few of them:
		Bamboo Rafting An exciting experience combining river rafting and trekking where you get to see wildlife at close quarters with least amount of disturbance to them. Also a chance to see indigenous people and their lifestyle makes this dawn to dusk trip worthwhile.

		Periyar Tiger Trail A team of five guides and two forest officials take you into the sanctuary. Pitch a camp, cook food and get to know these jungles real close in 2/3 days.

		Jeep Safari For those who would prefer to discover the wild without roughing it out, Jeep safari can be arranged to many idyllic locations nearby.

		Bullock Cart Discoveries Hop on a bullock cart and explore the villages beyond Periyar and get to know their farming practices first hand in a day.

		Border Hiking This day-long hard trek takes you along the periphery of the reserve. Two guides and an armed forest guard accompanies trekkers in this conservation-oriented trip.
